Technique Tuesday: Masking with Frosted Pinecones

Welcome to another Technique Tuesday! This month we’re playing with masking, and I decided to pull out the gorgeous Frosted Pinecones.

The coordinating decorative masks make it so much fun to layer different shades and slowly watch the pinecones and pine branches come to life. 🌲 I went with warm browns for the pinecones and Peaceful Pine for the greenery, which seemed rather appropriate. 😂

Steps

1. Create the background: Make your card base then Emboss a Basic White layer with the Textured Tree Ring 3D Embossing Folder.
2. Add the DSP: Add a strip of Valley in Bloom 12" x 12" DSP across the embossed background.
3. Mask the image: Use the Frosted Pinecones Decorative Masks to build the pinecones and greenery one layer at a time. I used Early Espresso, Pecan Pie and Peaceful Pine inks to create the different tones and details.
4. Add the focal image: Cut out the finished pinecone image and layer it over the card front.
5. Finish the card: Add a bow using the Baker’s Twine Essentials Pack, a sentiment and a few Natural Matte Dots for those final little details.

I really love how the masking gives the pinecones so much dimension without having to colour every tiny section individually. Each new mask layer adds another little piece of the puzzle until suddenly you have this big, detailed pinecone arrangement. 🌲🤎

And of course, I had to add some texture behind it. Between the embossed tree rings, soft patterned paper, twine and matte dots, there’s quite a lot happening on this card without it feeling too busy.
