Technique Tuesday: Playing with Colouring!

One of my absolute favorite things in cardmaking is colouring. This week for Technique Tuesday, I couldn’t wait to pull out the brand-new Autumn Trees stamp set to show off two of my favorite colouring techniques.

🍂 Dotting for Texture

I used small dots of colour in a few autumn shades to create dimension in the tree’s leaves. This technique works perfectly for fall trees, but it’s also great for adding texture to hair, animal fur, flowers,

🖤 Shading with Watercolor Pencils

To make the trunk stand out, I added shading with my black watercolor pencil. Just a little bit of depth really helps the image pop off the page!

Basic Instructions

1. Stamp your tree onto white cardstock using a black ink.

2. Add colour to the leaves by dotting different fall shades (yellows, oranges, reds, and a bit of green). Keep layering until you like the texture.

3. Shade the trunk with a black watercolor pencil, blending lightly for a natural look.

4. Die cut or fussy cut around the tree.

5. Prepare your card base – layer coordinating cardstock and an embossed or textured background.

6. Adhere the tree to the card front with dimensionals.

7. Stamp your sentiment and add it to the card with a little twine or embellishments.

8. Finish with a few sequins for a final touch!

I love how this card turned out – the tree looks full of life, and the shading really makes it stand out.
