Northern Lights Cardmaking Challenge

This week, my Coast to Coast team had a fun challenge—to create a card inspired by the Northern or Southern Lights. I imagined the view of laying down and looking up through the trees with the sky glowing in magical colors.

I pulled out the stunning Autumn Trees set and added heat embossing for extra texture and drama. I couldn’t decide which I loved more: the black-on-black embossing or the crisp white embossing. Both give such a unique look!

Basic Steps to Create This Card

1. Card Base

  • Start with a standard card base 8 ½” x 5 ½” and scored at 4 ¼”.

2. Embossed Trees

  • Cut a piece of Basic Black cardstock to 5 ½” x 4 ¼”.

  • Stamp the tree images from Autumn Trees in Versamark ink 4–5 times, with the leaves pointing toward the center, but leave space to see the lights.

  • Heat emboss with black embossing powder (for a bold silhouette look) or white embossing powder (for a frosted, glowing look).

  • Cut out the trees, keeping them in order as you cut for easier placement later.

3. Background

  • Take a piece of the stunning Lights of Aurora DSP cut to 5 ½” x 4 ¼”.

  • Adhere the embossed trees onto the DSP using dimensionals.

  • Trim any excess/over hang if needed.

  • Adhere the finished DSP layer to your card base.

4. Sentiment

  • Stamp your sentiment and add it to the card front.

  • Keep it simple so the background remains the star of the design.

5. Embellishments

  • Finish with a few sequins or gems for sparkle, like stars in the night sky. ✨

Two Looks, Same Technique

๐Ÿ’œ Black-on-black embossing creates a rich silhouette effect.
๐Ÿค White embossing makes the trees pop against the night sky.

Both versions capture the feeling of looking up into the glowing lights—just in different moods.

Which one would you try first?
