Layered Ferns & Fluttering Wings

Last month's Coast to Coast Challenge featured a sketch, and as soon as I saw it, I knew it was the perfect opportunity to play with layers! I pulled out the beautiful Fern & Flora collection and combined patterned papers, die-cut greenery, and delicate butterflies to create a card that feels like a peaceful walk through a garden. The sketch provided the structure while the layers added plenty of depth and interest.

Basic Steps

1. Card Base

Create your card base and cover the front with a mat layer of patterned paper layer featuring the soft green leaf design.

2. Build the Sketch

Cut two coordinating patterned paper rectangles and layer them at angles following the sketch layout. Add a narrow strip of contrasting patterned paper across the centre of the card.

3. Create the Focal Point

Die cut or punch a white circle and adhere it over the layered papers to create a focal area for your sentiment and embellishments.

4. Add the Greenery

Stamp, colour, and cut out the fern images. Add additional die-cut foliage pieces and layer them around the circle to create fullness and dimension.

5. Sentiment Layer

Stamp the sentiment onto a label and adhere it across the centre of the circle using dimensionals for extra depth.

6. Finishing Touches

Add moths around the design and finish with a few embellishments to bring everything together. Adhere all layers securely to the card front.

Sketch challenges are one of my favourite ways to spark creativity because they provide a starting point while still leaving lots of room to make the design your own. This card came together with plenty of layers, texture, and botanical details, proving that a simple sketch can grow into something truly beautiful.
