Basic Gray Monochromatic Florals

Basic Gray may be a neutral, but neutral definitely does not mean boring! 🩶🌸 For this week’s Monochromatic Insta Hop, I challenged myself to stick with shades of Basic Gray and let the details do all the talking.

The Flowers Fair stamp set created a beautiful floral background that almost looks like hand-drawn wallpaper. I added just a touch of soft pencil shading to some of the flowers and leaves, keeping plenty of white space so the design stayed light and airy.

For the focal point, I layered a bold potted plant over a Basic Gray circle and added the simple thanks sentiment. There is a lot happening on this card, but somehow all those shades of gray are getting along nicely. My craft supplies could learn something from them. 😂

Basic Steps

  1. Card Base
Cut and fold your Basic Gray cardstock to create the card base.
  2. Background Layer
Stamp the Flowers Fair floral image onto Basic White cardstock using Basic Gray ink. Fill the entire background with the floral design.
  3. Add Some Shading
Use a Basic Gray pencil to lightly shade selected flowers and leaves. Leave some of the images uncoloured to create contrast and keep the background from becoming too busy.
  4. Layer the Background
Adhere the completed floral panel to a Basic Gray cardstock mat, then attach it to the card base.
  5. Create the Focal Point
Die cut a large circle from Basic Gray cardstock and adhere it toward the lower right side of the card.
  6. Fussy cut the Plant
Fussy cut the potted plant image outof the DSP. Colour the pot then layer it over the Basic Gray circle.
  7. Add the Sentiment
Stamp the thanks sentiment onto a small strip of Basic White cardstock and adhere it across the plant image.
  8. Final Touches
Add a few small embellishments for a tiny bit of extra detail, then admire how Basic Gray somehow managed to become the star of the flower garden. 🩶

I love how this card turned out! The mix of detailed line art, soft pencil shading, and bold Basic Gray layers gives the design lots of interest without needing a rainbow of colours.

Monochromatic cards are such a fun way to look at one colour differently. Basic Gray might usually be the quiet one hanging out in the background, but today it grabbed the microphone and sang the whole song. 🎤🩶
