sketch time with my team

For this month’s Team Instagram Hop, our challenge was a sketch, and it was such a fun one to work with. The layered banner layout immediately was fantastic from Barry at Mitsue Crafts replicating of a race car flag, so I decided to CASE that style for my card.

To bring the design to life I paired the banner layout with the new cars set and coloured the images using pencil crayons. I love the softer texture pencil crayons give compared to markers and since there scent free helps not getting a headache, and they worked perfectly for adding depth and shading to the little cars. The bright colours against the layered banner background make the whole card feel energetic and playful.

Basic Steps:

  1. Card Base
Cut cardstock to 4 ¼ x 11. Score at 5 ½ and fold in half to create your card base.

  2. Background Layer
Cut a strip of basic blak card stock about 1inch x 5 1/2 then white card stock 3 1/4 x 5 1/2 Lay them out on swirly embossing folder and run threw the die cut. Adhere them to the card base.

  3. Create Race Car Flags
Cut a piece of white cardstock slightly larger than you think you’ll need. On the long side, cut strips starting at ½ inch, then repeat the cuts increasing each strip by ¼ inch.

Next, cut ¼-inch strips of black cardstock and weave them through the white strips to create the classic race flag pattern. (Barry used ½-inch strips, which I thought I was doing… until the very end when I realized mine were ¼ inch! ๐Ÿคฆ‍♀️๐Ÿ˜‚)

Once your weaving is complete, place tear-and-tape on the back to hold everything securely together. Trim the finished panel down to the size you need for your card.

You can watch Barry from Mitsue Crafts create this technique here . He explains and demonstrates it perfectly! Adhere them to card
  4. Stamping
Take your sentiment and stamp half in Granny Apple Green and the other half in Azure Afternoon stamp them then stamp your 2 cars

  5. Colour
colour the cars I used pencil crayons picking colours closest Granny Apple Lemon lime twist night of navy. Cut them out and adhere them and the sentiment to card.

Sketches are also one of my favourite tools when my crafting mojo is a little sleepy. Having a layout ready to go makes it so much easier to jump into creating without staring at a blank piece of cardstock wondering where to start.

Make sure you continue along the hop to see how everyone else interpreted the sketch. It’s always amazing to see how one simple layout can inspire so many different styles of cards.

๐Ÿฑ Happy Crafting! ๐Ÿฑ
